This course is ideal for:
Explore how games can support meaningful learning beyond traditional classroom activities.
In this free, two-hour lecture and workshop, we will explore how a commercial game can be used to achieve multiple learning outcomes, including transversal competencies that can be difficult to develop through traditional teaching methods.
Discover how a single commercial game can be used to develop different types of knowledge, skills and transversal competencies.
Case Study – Animal Crossing New Horizons: Examine how one of the world's most popular games has already been used for educational purposes.
Designing Educational Experiences: Learn how to transform an existing commercial game into an engaging learning activity without changing the game itself.
Integrating Games into Education: Explore ways to incorporate games into an existing curriculum or use them as stand-alone educational activities.
Beyond the Classroom: Consider where educational game-based activities can take place, from traditional classrooms to alternative learning environments.
🎓 The Lecture
We will use the popular digital game Animal Crossing: New Horizons as a case study to explore the possibilities of game-based learning. Together, we will examine how the game has already been used as an educational tool and analyse the features that make it suitable for different learning activities.
We will then go a step further and develop new ideas for using the game to support a variety of educational goals and transversal competencies.
During the session, we will also explore the practical side of game-based learning: how educational activities can be integrated into an existing curriculum, how to structure a stand-alone activity, and how the learning environment itself can influence the experience.
By the end of the lecture, you will have a better understanding of how commercial games can be transformed into purposeful learning experiences—and how game-based learning can extend beyond the traditional classroom.
