This course is ideal for:
Many aspiring level designers spend months jumping between tutorials, articles, and breakdowns - learning bits of information but never building a clear mental model of how levels are actually designed. This often leads to costly trial and error, frustration, and levels that don’t play as intended.
This course shortens that path. Instead of scattered advice, you’ll learn time-tested level design foundations, and a structured process guided by a professional level designer. All concepts will be explained and demonstrated. Each session will also provide a list of challenges for your further practice.
Rather than focusing on a single engine or genre, this course teaches essential level design principles that apply to any game from side scrollers and top-down adventure games to large-scale 3D environments.
To keep the focus on design instead of tools, all demonstrations and assignments are done in Super Mario Construct, a simple browser-based editor you can start exploring right now. This will allow us to practice faster, with clear constraints and without an overblown editor. We will design challenges, plan multiple playthroughs, and craft a solid pacing. Skills that will apply to any game you will work on later.
Even if a game has innovative mechanics, stunning art, a touching story, and solid code behind it, it will still require strong level design to bring all those elements together. Without it, those strengths will fail to reach the player or have the impact they deserve.
What you’ll learn:
✔️ Challenge-Driven Level Design: Learn how to design gameplay as a series of clear, solvable challenges instead of vague “fun moments.”
✔️ Player Movement & Metrics: Understand speed, timing, reaction windows, and spatial metrics that shape how levels actually play.
✔️ Flow, Pacing & Difficulty Curves: Control tension, rhythm, and rising difficulty to keep players engaged without frustration.
✔️ Meaningful Player Options: Create branching paths, optional content, secrets, and choices that offer real gameplay value.
✔️ Puzzle Design for Games: Build readable puzzles that change pace, avoid hard stops, and support multiple solutions.
✔️ Iteration & Playtesting: Learn how to gather feedback, observe players, and improve levels through structured iteration.
🎯By the end of the course, you'll have real experience in making levels. You will also be ready to continue making levels on your own. You will understand what steps need to be done to transform your intentions into a playable space. And all the knowledge that you will practice on Super Mario Construct would be transferable to any game genre out there.
