Text remains one of the oldest and most powerful expressive means of humanity, and a driving force behind classics such as A Mind Forever Voyaging and contemporary hits like Disco Elysium.
This short course aims to teach you how to use inkle's powerful ink narrative scripting language to build an interactive, intriguing, and fully explorable text-only virtual city.
To do so, you will learn the fundamentals of game urbanism, scripting in ink, narrative design, and worldbuilding. At the end of the course you will have created your own city of text ready to be posted online for everyone to experience or, perhaps more excitingly, ready to be used within a game engine as the basis of a larger project.
🎓 The first lecture will introduce you to cities of text and the basics of game city design, and will also teach you how to use the ink scripting language. The lecture will be followed by a collaborative city building workshop where we will build, flesh out, script and playtest a city together. The final session will be dedicated to showcasing your interactive cities, and providing you with the required feedback.
By the end of the course you will have imagined, created and scripted a fully interactive city. You will be able to combine worldbuilding, creative writing, game urbanism and ink scripting to create rich, memorable cities.
